Emma Coronel Aispuro is the wife of “El Chapo” Guzman, a former beauty queen, and now a federal inmate detained on charges accusing her of helping her husband run his multibillion dollar cartel in addition to plotting his audacious escape from a Mexican prison in 2015. At a recent detention hearing U.S. Magistrate Judge Robin Meriweather said that prosecutors had provided sufficient reason to keep Coronel in custody and noted that her attorney had consented to her temporary detention. Coronel’s arrest is the latest twist to what seemingly is an eternal war on drugs between the U.S. Department of Justice and the cartel narco enterprises that plague the nation of Mexico. However, at first glance Coronel may already appear to be guilty if one is judging her by the company she keeps, but proving her to be guilty of willingly conspiring with her husband to distribute cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, and marijuana into the United States may prove to be more difficult for prosecutors then expected.

Mike Vigil, who is the former Chief of International Operations for the Drug Enforcement Administration said Coronel “has been involved in the drug trade since she was a little girl” and “knows the inner workings of the Sinaloa cartel.” Coronel’s father, Ines Coronel Barreras, was also arrested in 2013 along with several other men including one of his sons who were in a warehouse with hundreds of pounds of marijuana across the border from Douglas, Arizona. Coronel Barreras was subsequently sentenced to 10 years in prison on April 28, 2017 for his role in drug trafficking and illegal possession of firearms. Now his daughter, Emma Coronel Aispuro, a former teenage American beauty queen, is facing life in prison after being arrested at Dulles International Airport on February 22, 2021 for conspiring to unlawfully import and distribute illegal drugs into the United States. For prosecutors their greatest challenge in prosecuting Mrs. Coronel Aispuro will not be proving how much she knew about the crimes of her husband as Mexico’s legendary narco Kingpin, but rather how large was the scope of her involvement in the importation and distribution of illegal narcotics into the United States. For Coronel, her challenge will be proving to judge and jury that while she may have been in the company of heinous drug lords, she is a victim of the circumstances of which she was born into but did not participate in any illegal deeds on behalf of the criminal enterprise that she’s associated with. As this story continues to unfold and develop, whichever of the two arguments that will prevail in the interest of justice is yet to be seen.

Moments before publishing this story The Fed Tribune confirmed that numerous media agencies such as New York Post and Daily Mail are reporting that Coronel Aispuro voluntarily surrendered to federal authorities at Virginia’s Dulles International Airport on February 22, 2021, and possibly cooperating with federal prosecutors. “I’m not going to respond to an anonymously planted story,” Aispuro’s lawyer Jeffrey Lichtman reportedly told the New York Post. U.S. federal prosecutors where Aispuro is charged also declined to comment. At this time The Fed Tribune cannot independently confirm the accuracy of this information.
