SEOUL, South Korea — South Korean President Moon Jae-in appears to be focused on diplomacy while steering clear of any disputes between rival nations. In an optimistic sign of warm relations with the Biden Administration, once he became President-Elect in part President Moon tweeted to Joe Biden "Our alliance is strong and the bond between our two countries is rock-solid." However, days ago President Moon drew a line in the sand in regards to any South Korea-U.S. alliance when he made it unequivocally clear that South Korea will not take sides in the boiling US-China rivalry. According to Moon, both relationships are equally important to South Korea and the South Korean President would even go so far as to assure Beijing that South Korea would not naturally take the side of its historical ally in Washington. President Moon has managed to build his presidential legacy on seeking diplomacy and peaceful solutions between rival nations. Moon, who met North Korea's Chairman Kim Jung Un three times in 2018, expressed optimism that international sanctions could someday end on the North Korean nation and allow projects to move forward between the two Koreas.

In recent events, prior to the Biden Administration taking office the South Korean leader urged the incoming Biden administration to not only build upon President Trump's achievements but also learn from the failures of his diplomatic engagements with North Korea. President Moon Jae-in directly lobbied to set up Trump’s three summits with North Korea's Chairman Kim Jong Un, but their diplomacy stalemated over disagreements concerning easing U.S.-led sanctions in return for North’s Korea's disarmament.
